Well, what is art, if not that pretentious thing that tries to take the fun out of working with the net, imposing its standards. Forget about it!
Jodi, in an interview with Tilman Baumgärtel. nettime 199708/msg00112.

Net art works, networkers, net artists, attracting my attention, accessible without fuss. Including roots. Plus nodes and some online materials.

Convincing net art breaks categories: experimenting with human networks, driving browser based art over the edge, opening complex virtual experiences or confusing routines with software art, or even turn the noise of coding keys into silence and simplicity. The criteria used here for sorting, are without a theoretical title, just for introductory orientation.

Your hardware and internet access
Whether net art looks poor or great might depend on your internet access and properly installed browser plugins. In general, works are hard to digest at connections below 56000 bit/sek.

On one hand a growing number of works require broad bandwith and high computing power. Some sites made for broad bandwidth can be downloaded page by page, then run at acceptable pace, other works may require download and installation anyway. On the other hand, digital works made on fast machines for fast connections mostly become accessible when computing power and bandwidth increase: The origins of net art today are visible with "a scrapheap running a browser" - if the binaries are still compatible.

The folks.de domainholder can be looked up. The naive germlish touch prooves, all text on surfboard and related pages, except forum contributions, is my own. If you find a good thought in it, be so nice to mention, you picked it up at yanas.

I'm too occupied with survival. Updating links and flashing the scene won't happen in 2008. If you feel a strong urge to contact me, you must be able to use obsolete technology: Sending a fax to 004922055176 will not automatically results in an answer, however, its a chance.

net art roots
Of the manyfold roots: Emerging as concrete poetry on a digital stoneage small green screen, the first characters were ASCII art. Look for hints at the ASCII art gallery and the ASCII art dictionary. Exceptional digital art also has been created on Amiga, Atari and comparable homecomputers, inbetween of much digital kitsch and folklore. For deep research dig where vintage computerplatforms are kept alive.
